Most advice about replying to Google reviews is about the bad ones. But most reviews are good, and how you reply to those matters too. Future customers read your replies, and a thoughtful one shows them you care.
Below are copy-ready replies for positive, mixed, and star-only reviews, examples for 9 types of business, and how to reply quickly without sounding like a template.
Quick answer: Thank the reviewer by name, mention something specific from their review, and keep it to two or three sentences. Reply to every review, ideally within a day or two. Avoid copy-paste replies: half of consumers are put off by generic or templated responses, according to BrightLocal.
Why replying to every review matters
BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, of 1,002 US consumers, found that:
- Replies are expected: 89% of consumers expect business owners to respond to reviews.
- Replies win customers: 80% are likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews, and 42% are unlikely to use one that never replies.
- Speed matters: 32% expect a reply by the next day, and 81% within a week.
- Templates backfire: 50% are put off by generic or templated responses.
So the goal is to reply to everything, quickly, in a way that still sounds like a real person wrote it.
How to reply to a Google review
According to Google's help page, your business must be verified first. Then:
- Go to your Business Profile and select Read reviews.
- Select Reply next to the review.
- Write your reply and select Reply.
The reviewer is notified when you reply, and your reply shows as coming from your business, not from you personally. Google checks replies against its content policies, which usually takes up to 10 minutes. You can edit or delete a reply at any time.

Tips for better replies
- Keep it short: two or three sentences is plenty for a positive review.
- Mention a detail: repeat something specific from their review, so it's clearly not a template.
- Never share private details: don't confirm appointments, treatments, or anything a customer hasn't made public. This matters most for health clinics and professional services.
- Skip the sales pitch: a thank you lands better than a discount code or a list of your services.
- Use their name: use the name they show on Google, and sign off as the business or a first name.
Customers can still edit their review after you reply. If they update it, check your reply still makes sense.
