You check your Business Profile and the numbers don't add up. A review you know was posted has gone, or your review count has dropped overnight. It's a horrible feeling, especially when reviews are how new customers find you.
Reviews go missing for a handful of reasons. Some are Google's rules doing their job, some are Google's spam protection catching genuine businesses, and some are plain glitches that fix themselves. This guide explains each one, how to tell which you're dealing with, and what you can actually do. We make RepU, a Google review widget, and we've linked every claim to Google or to reports of Google's own statements. Everything here is current as of 31 October 2026.
Quick answer: first, check whether other businesses are reporting the same problem, because widespread glitches usually fix themselves. If it's only you, the most likely cause is a review that broke Google's policies, or a temporary review pause after spam or fake reviews. Don't post or buy replacement reviews. Keep asking every customer, and contact Google support if genuine reviews stay missing.
The common reasons Google reviews disappear
A Google glitch
Sometimes reviews vanish from view because of a problem on Google's side. In February 2025, Google confirmed a display issue that made reviews look missing on many profiles, saying "the reviews themselves have not actually been removed". These issues usually affect lots of businesses at once, and the reviews come back when Google fixes it.
A review pause after spam or fake reviews
When Google detects suspicious activity on a profile, it can temporarily pause reviews to prevent further abuse. In July 2026, many businesses reported reviews disappearing, often after their profile was hit with fake reviews. Google told Search Engine Roundtable it was investigating and would "restore any reviews that were incorrectly removed", and Search Engine Roundtable later updated its report to say the issue was resolved.
The review broke Google's policies
Google removes reviews that break its content policies, like spam, off-topic content, conflicts of interest, or reviews posted in exchange for an incentive. Google's systems check reviews automatically, so a genuine-looking review can still be filtered if something about it, or the account that posted it, looks suspicious.
Your profile was suspended or reinstated
If your Business Profile was suspended, your reviews may not show while it's down. Reviews can also be slow to return after a profile is reinstated. In August 2026, Google said it was aware of reviews missing after reinstatement and was working on a fix.
How to tell which one you're dealing with
| What you're seeing | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Lots of businesses reporting missing reviews at once | A Google glitch | Wait, and watch the Business Profile Community for updates |
| Many reviews gone, and new ones not appearing | A review pause after spam or fake reviews | Report any fake reviews, then contact support if it lasts |
| One or two reviews gone | The review broke a policy, or was filtered | Check it against Google's policies |
| Reviews missing after your profile came back | A suspension or reinstatement issue | Contact Business Profile support |
What to do when reviews go missing
- Check if it's widespread: search the Google Business Profile Community and recent search news. If lots of businesses are affected, wait for Google to fix it.
- Check the missing reviews against Google's policies: look for anything that could break the rules, like a review from a staff member or one that mentions a discount.
- Report any fake reviews: use Google's Reviews Management Tool to report reviews that break the rules, rather than replying to them angrily.
- Contact Google support: if genuine reviews stay missing after a week or two, contact Business Profile support from your profile, and explain what's missing and when it happened.
- Keep collecting reviews the right way: ask every customer for an honest review, and never offer a reward for one.
Whatever you do, don't try to replace missing reviews with fake ones, or ask staff and friends to post them. That breaks Google's rules, can make a review pause last longer, and fake reviews are illegal in many countries.
What happens to the reviews on your website?
A review widget shows the reviews Google makes available. If Google hides reviews from your profile, they may disappear from your widget too, and come back once Google restores them. With RepU, there's nothing to do on your website. The widget updates automatically.
If you use a manual testimonials section instead, check whether any reviews you copied onto your site have since been removed from Google, so your site stays accurate.
Do missing reviews hurt your local ranking?
They can. Google says review count is part of prominence, one of the factors in local ranking, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help. That's another reason to keep a steady flow of genuine reviews coming in. It also means there's no shortcut: Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
How to protect your reviews
- Ask every customer: don't only ask your happy customers. Google prohibits selectively asking for positive reviews.
- Keep staff and family out of it: reviews based on a conflict of interest break Google's rules.
- Never offer a reward: no discounts, gifts, or payment in exchange for a review.
- Reply to reviews: it shows you're an active, genuine business, and helps future customers.
- Report fake reviews promptly: use the Reviews Management Tool as soon as you spot them.

Frequently asked questions
Will Google restore my missing reviews?
If they were removed by mistake or hidden by a glitch, usually yes. Google has said it will restore reviews that were incorrectly removed. Reviews removed for breaking its policies won't come back.
Why can't customers leave new reviews?
Your profile may have a temporary review pause, which Google uses to stop further abuse after suspicious activity. It usually lifts on its own. If it doesn't, contact Business Profile support.
Can I ask a customer to post their review again?
You can let them know it isn't showing, but don't pressure them. If the original review was removed for breaking a policy, posting it again won't help.
Will my website widget show the missing reviews?
No. A review widget shows what Google makes available, so hidden reviews won't appear on your site until Google restores them.
